The grant was extended to the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) with the aim to evaluate the development, safety and efficacy of tenofovir gel and ARV dapivirine drug in preventing HIV infection in healthy, HIV-negative women and to strengthen the capacity of research centres across sub-Saharan Africa to conduct high quality clinical trials to advance microbicide development for HIV prevention. The grant contributed to conduct HIV incidence studies in new communities, implement community engagement activities at selected research locations, provide research centers with core support, upgraded and/or scaled up infrastructure and equipment, and expanded staff and strengtheedn staff capacity at selected research centers.
