OFID observes National Women's Day
March 8, 2017. Together with the international community, OFID is today observing International Women’s Day, which marks the economic, social, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe. OFID has always recognized the important role that women play in the development process. As nurturers, they are involved in family health and nutrition, schooling, food production and fetching water and firewood. And, they are often the heads of households and leaders in the community.
OFID is highly supportive of the ideals embraced by the international Sustainable Development Goals which strive, among other things, to eradicate poverty and hunger; achieve quality education for all; promote gender equality and empower women; and improve maternal health and reduce child mortality. The goals also seek to secure universal access to modern energy and clean water; two areas where deficiencies disproportionately affect women and girls.
In the 41 years since its inception, OFID has co-financed myriad projects that set out to reduce maternal/infant mortality, promote micro-credit schemes and small enterprises run by women and boost female literacy. Vocational training for women also receives substantial support.
And when it comes to gender equality, OFID is immensely proud of the fact that there is genuine substance to its advocacy; with 50% of its staff comprising women, it openly practices what it preaches.
