OFID celebrates Universal Children’s Day: Hosts “Together for Tanzania” children's art exhibition
November 20, 2012
In celebration of Universal Children’s Day, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) hosted the opening of a children’s art exhibition “Together for Tanzania” on November 19. The exhibition is a joint initiative between OFID, the NGO Africa Amini Alama (AAA), and Austrian artist Werner Szendi to raise funds toward the construction of an art center in Momello, Tanzania.
The reception was hosted by OFID Director-General, Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish and HE Mr. Ahmada Rweyemamu Ngemera, Tanzanian Ambassador to Austria. The exhibition is the result of an artistic event which took place on September 8 this year when Mr. Szendi and a team of trained artists assisted more than 1,000 children from five different schools in the Arusha region to paint together under the theme “what I always dreamed.”
OFID is exhibiting - at its headquarters - the paintings produced on that day. The paintings will be sold to raise the necessary funds for the art center project. In his opening statement, Mr. Al-Herbish spoke of the need for young people in the developing world to be given the opportunity to “have a voice on the global stage.” He expressed OFID’s pride in presenting the “unique voices” of the young artists.
AAA founder, Austrian physician Dr Christine Wallner, said at the opening: “I have always told my supporters that their contribution is a one-to-one relationship which only happens when they are deeply involved. OFID has shown such strong involvement in its support towards our new center.” AAA was founded in 2009 by Dr Wallner, following her own initiative to establish a medical center and clinic in the Arusha region in 2007. The organization aims at raising awareness and implementing practical solutions for improving living standards in small communities in Tanzania.
OFID has worked in partnership with Tanzania since 1976, contributing to poverty alleviation through development financing and grassroots projects which directly touch the lives of those most in need.
The exhibition is open to the public from November 20 to 30, 2012;
